霍金逝世，終年76歲。霍金除了學術成就備受關注，他堅毅求生的精神也令人動容，而不少他說過的話，會繼續流傳下去。

霍金還在研究院時被診斷出患有肌萎縮性脊髓側索硬化症（俗稱「漸凍症」），當時醫生表示，患者壽命一般只有2至5年，霍金20歲左右發病，一直對抗頑疾，是非常罕見例子。


「請記著要保持好奇心。仰望星空，別老是俯視腳步，為你所見的尋找意義，驚嘆這宇宙如何形成。無論生命看來是何等艱難，你也有機會有所成就，重點是不要放棄。」
"Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up."

「在我21 歲時，我的期望值變成了零。自那以後，一切都是賺到的。」
"My expectations were reduced to zero when I was 21. Everything since then has been a bonus."

霍金也很關心神及宗教：

「我們有自由相信自己想信的事，而我的立場是『沒有上帝』是最簡單的解釋。沒有創造宇宙、控制我們命運的神。這給我深刻的體會。天堂和死後生命也不太可能存在。我們只有這一次生命去欣賞宇宙的宏大設計，對此我非常感激。」
"We are each free to believe what we want and it is my view that the simplest explanation is there is no God. No one created the universe and no one directs our fate. This leads me to a profound realization. There is probably no heaven, and no afterlife either. We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that, I am extremely grateful."

「愛因斯坦錯了——他說『上帝不玩骰子』。對黑洞的研究表明，上帝不光玩骰子，甚至有時候他會把我們弄糊塗，因為他把它們丟到了看不見的地方。」
"Einstein was wrong when he said "God does not play dice". Consideration of black holes suggests, not only that God does play dice, but that He sometimes confuses us by throwing them where they can't be seen."

對於科學探究，霍金則這樣解釋他一生所追求的：
